Scientists at the Pennsylvania College of Information Science and Technology have developed an AI-powered emergency call tool that can reduce first aid time by 12% for pregnant women in Kenya. This is reported on the university’s website.

About one-third of maternal and infant deaths in Kenya are due to the failure of pregnant women to receive timely medical care. The tool, called TRIage, uses artificial intelligence to process messages from women. If the message contains danger signs, it is forwarded to a small team that can provide assistance in an emergency.

The introduction of the system has reduced the time it takes to help pregnant women and young mothers by 12%. On average, a support person contacted them within an hour of the request. 85% of women actually needed hospitalization, confirming the accuracy of the system.

The tool is currently used by more than 350,000 women in Kenya. They send about a million messages each month, which is way more than their support team can handle.
