Scientists at the University of Michigan have discovered that endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in plastic may contribute to the development of diabetes in women. Research published Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Phthalates are chemicals commonly used in cosmetics, perfumes, and toys. Phthalate exposure has previously been shown to be associated with decreased fertility and endocrine disorders.

Researchers followed 1,308 women for six years. Diabetes was diagnosed in 5% of the women during follow-up. The phthalate level in the body was evaluated by urine analysis. White women exposed to high levels of certain phthalates were 30-63% more likely to develop diabetes. The risk of diabetes in blacks and Asian women was independent of phthalate levels.

The scientists noted that humans are exposed to phthalates on a daily basis, so it is important to assess their harm to human health.
