Gavrilita took office at the head of a government of thirteen ministers on 6 August, after gaining the support of 61 deputies from the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS). However, his tenure was marked by instability, the resignations of five ministers and deputy ministers, and the war in Ukraine.
In a message, the president thanked the outgoing prime minister for his work during “unprecedented challenges”. In this senseSandu applauded his “responsible” government: “We have stability, peace and development while others want war and bankruptcy.”
Sandu announced a series of contacts with different parties to test the appointment of a new head of government. The resignation of Gavrilita, who was in Brussels this week in search of a closer rapprochement with the EU, coincides with the entry of missiles into Moldovan airspace that resulted in Russian forces hitting Ukraine. Moldova, a neighboring country to Ukraine, has been hit by a large number of shells since the beginning of the operation and has also suffered from basic necessities such as electricity as a result of attacks on the other side of the border.
