People with fair skin and who have had several sunburns in their lifetime are at higher risk of developing melanoma. Igor Utyashev, oncologist, candidate of medical sciences, leader of the melanoma, skin tumors and sarcomas group of the Institute of Oncology, a branch of the Israeli clinic “Hadassah” in Skolkovo, told socialbites.ca.

According to the expert, the first category of patients at high risk of developing melanoma are people with “family melanoma” cases with one or more relatives with melanoma in the family.

“The second group of patients are people with fair skin, or rather people with the first and second Fitzpatrick phototypes. Melanoma is most common in them, and it is these skin types that are most common in Russia. The fact is that in people with white and fair skin, they protect their skin cells from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. there is very little melanin, the protective pigment that protects them. They can hardly sunbathe – they immediately burn, blush, ”said the candidate of science.

The third category of patients at risk are those who are forced to take drugs that reduce immunity for medical reasons.

“Also, patients who have sunburned several times in their lifetime are at risk. Igor Utyashev noted that one or two sunburns in childhood are proven risk factors for the development of melanoma and skin cancer, especially in adulthood.

He noted that visiting the solarium due to burns is also associated with an increased risk of developing melanoma. The thing is that in a solarium it is impossible to control the intensity of ultraviolet radiation, because the client only tells the operator the time. Almost never, visitors do not take into account skin phototypes and the presence of related problems, which often lead to the development of burns and melanoma, respectively.

“Another category is people with congenital nevi that cover most of the entire limb, face, or any part of the body. At the same time, this in itself is not very dangerous, but such people may have an increased risk of melanoma, so throughout their life they need to be very careful so that there is no nodule or some kind of scar on this birthmark. If this happens, you should immediately contact an oncologist, ”warned the oncologist.

According to him, people with a total number of moles exceeding 50 or 100 in the body are also at risk and should be examined by a dermatologist, oncodermatologist or general practitioner who is knowledgeable about diagnosing skin tumors at least once a year.
