The General Assembly of the Anglican Church voted in favor of legal recognition of same-sex marriage. Telegram. The vote comes after Council of Europe bishops rejected calls in January to allow same-sex marriage in churches.
Voting took place in all three chambers of the Assembly. In the Council of the Bishops, 36 bishops voted in favor and 4 against, with two abstaining. Opinions were divided among the priests: 111 voted in favor, 85 voted against, and three more abstained. In the lay council, 103 voted in favor, 92 against, and five abstained.
The Bishop of London, Sarah Mullally, took an active role in promoting the same-sex marriage issue in the Synod.
In January, Church of England bishops apologized to LGBTQI+ believers for “rejection, isolation and hostility”.
The General Assembly of the Church of England was established as a legislative body in 1970.
