Failure to correct poor vision can cause headaches and dizziness, and may lead to the development of amblyopia in children. Mariam Taevere, Candidate of Medical Sciences, an ophthalmologist at the branch of the Israeli clinic Hadassah in Skolkovo, told socialbites.ca about this.
According to the expert, people often ignore vision correction, compensating for this by squinting, but this cannot be done for a long time.
“Visibility does not worsen due to scratching, but because over time the connection between the eye and the brain will not be formed, this condition can threaten adults with headaches, dizziness, discomfort and reduced quality of life, and children with amblyopia who have a permanent decrease in vision. If a person needs to squint to improve their vision, they should wear glasses or contact lenses without ignoring the problem,” Taevere advised.
He also noted that many are afraid to wear glasses if the “plus” or “minus” is small so as not to worsen vision. However, glasses do not affect the progression of myopia or hyperopia.
“Furthermore, you shouldn’t assume that using an optical correction weaker than necessary will save vision or contribute to eye training in some way – that’s not the case,” the ophthalmologist said.
The candidate of science said that in order to prevent visual impairment, it is worth limiting long-term work at the computer, which leads to various eye diseases, among which the leading positions are occupied by dry eye syndrome and accommodation disorder (false myopia). or use moisturizing drops containing hyaluronic acid.
“It is also recommended that you take a break from working at the computer every 20-30 minutes and look at objects away from the monitor screen – about 6 meters away. Reliable methods of preventing the progression of myopia and visual impairment are also the use of optical correction – glasses or contact lenses, orthokeratology (night) lenses and low concentrations of atropine, ”the expert said.
He noted that the need for all these measures is determined by an ophthalmologist only after a detailed examination, during which the condition of the ocular surface and the presence of concomitant pathologies are evaluated.
