Iran’s lead nuclear negotiator, Ali Bagheri Kani, stated on Sunday that Tehran is ready to move negotiations toward a close and to safeguard the goals of revitalizing the 2015 agreement. He signaled that Iran is prepared to push the Vienna talks to a swift conclusion while staying committed to the core framework of the JCPOA. Tehran believes momentum is building toward finalizing the accord without unnecessary delays.

Bagheri Kani explained that Iran has shared its proposals clearly, both in substance and in how they are presented. He argued that these ideas could pave the way for a rapid wrap up of the negotiations. He pointed to the need to address what he described as the complicated and harmful consequences of the unilateral and illegal U.S. withdrawal from the agreement, emphasizing that a structured path exists to repair the breach and restore balance to the agreement’s terms.

The Iranian diplomat stressed that Tehran is ready to conclude negotiations soon and that it maintains close cooperation with other signatories, especially the European Union. He noted that the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs, Josep Borrell, should demonstrate goodwill by pushing for constructive diplomacy and facilitating consensus among all parties involved.

The 2015 nuclear accord, known as the JCPOA, limits Iran’s atomic program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. In 2018, however, the United States under then-President Donald Trump withdrew from the agreement and reimposed broad sanctions on Iran. In response, Tehran began expanding its nuclear activities and increasing uranium enrichment outputs a year later, arguing that the move was a necessity to vindicate its rights and exert leverage in negotiations.

Since the previous year, Tehran has been engaged with the five major powers plus direct engagement with the United States in pursuit of reestablishing the atomic treaty. While there has been progress in some areas, officials on both sides have acknowledged that several significant issues remain unresolved and require renewed resolve and political will from all involved parties.

Both Iran and the United States acknowledge that substantial gaps persist and that overcoming them will require sustained political determination from each side. The path forward hinges on trust, verifiable steps, and a shared commitment to restoring the JCPOA’s mechanisms for transparency and restraint. The dialogue continues, with many observers watching for a concrete roadmap that can command broad support among the international community [Source: Reuters].
