Roscosmos, together with partner agencies aboard the International Space Station (ISS), took measures to ensure the station crew’s safe return to Earth in the event of an accident prior to the arrival of the Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft on February 22. “Due to an emergency on the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft, its crew – Sergey Prokopiev, Dmitry Petelin and Francisco Rubio – will return to Earth with the Soyuz MS-23, which is expected to dock to the ISS in unmanned mode. February 22,” – says the message.

As Roscosmos noted, currently the ISS and Soyuz systems are operating normally, but in the event of an accident, the crew will need emergency evacuation before the Soyuz MS-23 arrives.

If necessary, Francisco Rubio will return to Earth in the Crew Dragon spacecraft (his chair will be temporarily moved there on January 17-18), and the rest of the cosmonauts will return to Soyuz MS-22.

The government agency stressed that it would be safer for only two cosmonauts to land on the Soyuz MS-22 as it would help lower the temperature and humidity on board.
