Alcohol consumption can cause the destruction and loss of teeth, increase their sensitivity and provoke the development of pathological processes in the oral cavity. Evgenia Boytsova, an orthopedic dentist and founder of the Asteavita clinic, told socialbites.ca about this.

According to the expert, the fact is that alcohol contains ethanol or ethyl alcohol, which can wash away calcium, the main building block of hard dental tissues.

“Therefore, the teeth lose their strength, decay develops and sensitivity increases. It also causes rapid tooth decay. “Among other things, ethanol leaches out iron, zinc and other minerals needed to maintain healthy teeth.”

He also added that alcoholic beverages also affect the microflora of the oral cavity. When alcohol is abused, an acidic environment is created in the mouth – the best conditions for the reproduction of harmful bacteria.

“An acidic environment can provoke the development of pathological processes, both in the enamel and in its root, ligaments, as well as in the gum and bone socket. The most obvious “symptoms” of drinking alcohol on the teeth are plaque, which is formed when the microflora changes and tooth enamel darkens. Also, plaque causes the development of gingivitis – inflammation of the gums that leads to periodontitis. Thus, the teeth become more mobile, there is discomfort and bleeding, the probability of tooth loss from time to time increases,” warned Evgenia Boytsova.

He added that he violates the microflora of the oral cavity and dehydration of the body from alcohol – dryness appears, which stimulates the development of pathological processes. In addition, alcohol often contains a large amount of sugar, which is a nutrient for harmful microorganisms.

“During life, they release acids that destroy and erode tooth enamel. And drinks containing colored substances can stain both teeth and previous restorations. Effervescent drinks, on the other hand, promote the development of dental hypersensitivity and make the teeth less durable, ”the dentist concluded.

Former nutritionist announcedWhat happens in the body when we cut out sugar?
