As a force in clean energy and with the increasing weight of renewable energy sources in the energy mix, Spain taking a step back in the electric bus industry. The number of registered zero-emission buses in our country fell in 2022, and diesel-powered buses also picked up the ground. Considering that companies producing electric buses in Spain are selling more and more vehicles abroad, this is an even more incomprehensible setback.
According to data from the private portal forococheselectricos.com, the sales share of diesel-powered buses was 52.9% in 2021 but increased to 67% in 2022. Y While fossil fuels gain ground, electric buses are on the decline: from 6.6% sold in 2021 to 6% in 2022.
Hybrid engines and petrol engines have also declined, which explains the rise of diesel engines.
Another reason for concern is the use of electric buses. They are only sold in very few cities.that is, they do not take root in the country as a whole.
According to the same portal in 2022; A total of 141 electric buses were sold in Spain, 54 of which were to the city of Barcelona. (about 40% of the total), with Madrid acquiring 28 and Zaragoza 13 more. In other words, 67% of the electric buses of the year were purchased in the country among these three cities.
In fact, only 17 city councils have purchased any units of this type of clean vehicle during the year just ended; this demonstrates the insufficient attention shown by both public administrations and service concessionaires.
A few days ago, the autonomous government of the Region of Murcia announced the purchase of 17 electric buses for the region of Cartagena.
Curiously, Spanish companies are selling electric buses to foreign countries at good speed. For example, Irizar signed a contract with the city of Paris to sell 113 units in 2021, while CAF, also Spanish, sold 183 units to the Oslo City Council (Norway).
Spain is next in electric cars: 3.8%
According to provisional data, Spain will close the year 2022 with a total sales of 31,388 pure electric cars, which is 31.1% more than the previous year.. This sales figure assumes that there are currently 100% electric cars in our country. A share of 3.8%.
These figures confirm that Spain is on the European wagon in this regard. Take the numbers for Portugal, for example. 12% of pure electric cars in the same year, 15.1% of France or 22% of Germany.
Gasoline cars accounted for 40% of sales in 2022, down 12% from last year. Non-plug-in hybrids increased by 9% to 30%. Diesel fell 21%, representing 17% of sales. Plug-in hybrids grew 11% to represent 6.2% of market share, and pure electricity accounted for 4.8% of that total, up 31% from last year. Gas powered cars are 2% of the total.
