“Many people still believe that the dog was created to gnaw bones. It can even be dangerous and can cause trauma to the tooth, mouth or intestinal obstruction. The instinct to gnaw something itself is perfectly normal, but it developed in those days when dogs did not have access to a normal amount of food, so they had to gnaw leftovers.” says the doctor.
Fatty foods pose a separate danger because, like cats, dogs have not evolved to adapt to the consumption of these foods. Six grams of fat for a cat is equivalent to eating a pack of butter for a human. Healthy animals can digest small amounts of food on the table, such as cheese. But an animal with chronic intestinal or pancreatic disease may end up in intensive care because of such treatments.
