January
17. Anniversary of Palomares accident (Almeria, 1966). That day, two USAF planes accidentally collided while passing over this town and lost four thermonuclear bombs that fell on the beach. They didn’t explode, but they did raise radioactivity levels in the area alarmingly.
26. World Environmental Education Day. It is dedicated to promoting the teaching of environmental content at all educational levels to advance knowledge of nature.
28. Earth Day for Reducing CO2 Emissions. Date set by the UN to raise awareness among society and institutions that pollutant emissions into the atmosphere need to be reduced urgently.

eleven. Anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear accident (Japan, 2011). As a result of a strong earthquake and a severe tsunami, the plant suffered several explosions that caused the release of radioactivity. Thousands of people were evacuated.
14. International Day of Action for Rivers. It was established to spread the importance of river systems in ecosystems.
twenty. pesticide free week. This week is a week to report the risks posed by pesticides used in agriculture to health and the environment.
twenty one. International Forest Day o World Forest Day. History to reflect on the importance of forest masses in maintaining the ecological balance of the planet and their importance in biodiversity.
22. world Water Day. Announcing the status of this essential resource and the importance of its preservation.
24. Anniversary of Exxon Valdez crash (Alaska, 1989). That day this oil tanker ran aground off the coast of Alaka, spewing 37,000 tons of hydrocarbons and polluting more than 2,000 kilometers of coastline.
28. Anniversary of the Three Mile Island accident (USA, 1979). This nuclear power plant underwent partial melting of its core and released large amounts of radioactivity. Authorities assure that there are no deaths, but independent experts note a high number of cancers among the population.
April
17. World Peasant Struggle Day. On this date, a moment of silence is paid to the villagers who sacrificed their lives for a better world, for Agrarian Reform and Food Sovereignty, for the protection and preservation of nature.
twenty. BP oil rig accident In the Gulf of Mexico (2010). The explosion of a well caused the ‘Deepwater Horizon’ platform to explode, spewing 800 million liters of hydrocarbons over 80 days.
22. Earth Day. It is dedicated to promoting care for the planet from an environmental perspective.
26. Anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident (Ukraine, 1986). The nuclear power plant in that town exploded and released a large amount of radiation into the atmosphere, which spread across Europe. There were 31 direct deaths from the accident, but there is still debate about the total deaths from radiation sickness.
27. International Noise Awareness Day. It is dedicated to reinvigorating the importance of reducing noise pollution in urban centres.
29 Anniversary of Cabrera’s declaration (Balear Islands) as a National Park.

28. Anniversary of Spanish Coastal Law (1988). A regulation that was unanimously approved and is key to protecting the national coastline.

8. International Cat Day, aimed to raise awareness about this pet. There are two more days a year dedicated to the cat, but this is the most widely accepted.
9. International Day of Indigenous Peoples. It is dedicated to raising awareness of the situation in which indigenous communities of the planet find themselves victims of habitat destruction.

19. Anniversary of Vandellós I accident (Tarragona, 1989). A fire classified as a level 3 event (“major event”) broke out in the turbine area, did not emit radioactivity.

13. Prestige tanker accident (2002). The ship was carrying 77,000 tons of oil when it sank off the coast of Galicia. Thousands of volunteers participated in the cleaning work of the beach.
