Finally, 2022 was a bad year, ending the good track we’ve had in protecting animals. In 2020 and 2021, abandonment of animals it was contained and the numbers had us dreaming of zero abandonment, 2022 gave us a reality check.

Once mobility, daily living, habitual uses and customs have improved and the likelihood of post-pandemic vacations has improved, animals abandoned and returned to pay the price of their owners’ irresponsibilityhas become the main maltreatment of dogs and cats in the last year in our country. However, its high figures could not come close to the pre-pandemic period.

In addition, adoption continued unstoppably throughout 2022. The number of Spanish households deciding to adopt a dog or cat as a pet has multiplied and adoption has been consolidated as the preferred system when it comes to owning a new pet. For this reason, many commercial organizations that previously specialized in selling are now cooperating with guardians and releasing them for adoption. For their part, social networks have also collaborated with this upward trend and have been very helpful in spreading special animal cases that for some reason need a quick pickup.

As for the illegal trade of other animals and species, there is nothing new to say. Given the laziness and inaction of the different governments of the world, rising lucrative jobs for soulless people.

What will happen in 2023? Nobody knows. Let’s hope that abandonment declines, adoption continues to skyrocket, physical abuse becomes increasingly exceptional, and that eventually someone does something against the illegal trade in the species. What we do know is that 2023 will bring new laws, and while these are necessary, they will miss opportunities, mostly because no consensus has been reached and above all ignore that the whim of a few people will never do. to be above the knowledge and science of experts.
