Physicists at the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne in France discovered that gas from an uncorked champagne bottle comes out at supersonic speeds. Also, a brief blue cloud appears on the neck immediately after opening the drink. About these scientists said French news portal 20 minutes.
In their work, the research team opened champagne bottles and filmed them with special equipment. After the experts studied the images and made calculations.
“In many frames we consistently saw the appearance of a small horizontal line parallel to the neck of the bottle. It is a shock wave in which gas escapes faster than sound within one thousandth of a second after the bottle is opened. It’s like a rocket taking off,” the scientists explained.
A near-neck cloud is caused by the carbon dioxide contained in champagne turning into dry ice crystals. According to scientists, they did not find anything revolutionary, these are a few interesting facts that were previously hidden from researchers.
