Chinese researchers from Peking University have discovered that acupuncture can help treat irritable bowel syndrome accompanied by diarrhea. The results of the work of scientists published In the journal JAMA Network Open.
A team of experts recruited 90 people diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) accompanied by diarrhea. All participants received 12 acupuncture sessions lasting 30 minutes for four weeks. At the same time, the volunteers were divided into three groups: the first group received acupuncture at certain acupuncture points, the second – at non-specific points, and the third was subjected to imitation of acupuncture.
Before and after the experiment, the scientists collected data on the condition of all participants’ bodies to compare the results before and after acupuncture. As it turned out, relief from IBS was observed in 64.3% of the people in the first group, 62.1% of the people in the second group and 55.2% of the people in the third group.
In the future, scientists will conduct a series of studies to more accurately assess the effectiveness of the procedure.
