Scientists from the Guangzhou Institute of Microbiology found that bacteria that secrete antioxidant substances are common in the intestines of Chinese centenarians. The research was published in the journal npj Biofilms Microbiomes.
The scientists analyzed the composition of the gut microbiomes of 247 healthy people from the city of Jiaoling, sometimes called the “city of 100 years.” Among the project participants, 18 were over 100 years old and 19 were between 81 and 99 years old.
Biologists identified bacteria from 107 families in participants’ stool samples. Bacteria count increased at birth in people over 80 lactobacillus, Akkermansia, Metanobrevibacteria, roseburia.
The scientists also characterized the most active genes of gut bacteria, primarily those associated with the production of antioxidant substances. They found it to be the most “antioxidant” strain when administered intragastrically. Lactobacillus plantarum In animals 124, signs of oxidative stress in the liver and kidneys were reduced.
The scientists’ results suggest that the gut microbiota may play an important role in prolonging life, but this hypothesis requires further research.
