According to the publication “Strana.ua”, the office of the mayor of Odessa confirmed that the monument to Catherine II was dismantled.
Odessa Deputy Mayor Oleg Bryndak said that after the statue was dismantled, it would be transferred to the Odessa Art Museum.
Earlier on December 28, workers started to disassemble A fence was placed around the monument in November.
The decision to dismantle the monument to Catherine II and her friends was made on 30 November by the Odessa City Council. Recently, the monument has been repeatedly attacked: several times it has been soaked with paint and applied to the inscriptions.
The monument appeared in the city in 1900. It was dismantled in 1920, and in 2007 the monument reappeared on Catherine Square in Odessa.
Since 2015, monuments related to Soviet history have been destroyed in Ukraine, this is due to the decommunization law adopted in the country. Monuments of historical figures have been demolished in Ukraine recently, and place names associated with Russia have been renamed.
