Researchers at King’s College London discovered that alfalfa contains compounds that fight certain fungal skin infections, such as athlete’s foot and ringworm. The results of the study were presented at the British Pharmacy Conference.

According to scientists, the plant protects itself against fungal infections with compounds called saponins. These plant-derived substances taste bitter and form foam when mixed in water. They are used in soaps, medicines, fire extinguishers and other products.

Alfalfa extract may prove to be an effective treatment for fungal skin infections in humans. The researchers hope to create a cream that will act as an alternative to existing drugs in parts of the world where pharmaceutical antifungals are not available.
