Scientists from the Rutgers School of Medicine found that a woman’s diet during the first trimester of pregnancy does not affect subsequent weight gain, but excessive consumption of red meat may contribute to it. The results of the research were published in the journal BMC Nutrition.

The study included 101 pregnant women receiving prenatal care at Kathmandu University Hospital. Each participant completed a 21-item questionnaire during the first trimester to assess nutritional quality. Healthy foods include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, while unhealthy foods include sweets, refined grains, and red meat. The scientists found that diet quality in early pregnancy did not affect the rate of weight gain.

However, high red meat consumption has contributed to weight gain. Scientists suggest that not only the quality of the diet, but also physical activity, sleep quality, and other lifestyle factors can influence pregnancy weight gain.

The authors are currently testing a mobile app to support pregnant women with gestational diabetes that will provide them with information to implement diet and lifestyle changes. Scientists believe that it is possible to reduce the incidence of obesity and diabetes in the next generation by improving the health of pregnant women.
