HSE experts determined the level of cynicism in the work of employees from different groups. This was reported by the press service of the university.
Sociologists and psychologists formulated the concept of “organizational cynicism” at the end of the 20th century. It reflects the level of cynicism towards the place where the employee works and the tasks he performs and his superiors. This indicator is negative – it is believed to be associated with low job satisfaction, poor team morale and poor performance of tasks.
Scientists from the National Research University Higher School of Economics adapted the accepted scale of organizational cynicism to the Russian language and conducted a study using it. 424 people participated in the adaptation – 296 women and 128 men aged 19 to 84. The average experience of the respondents is 16.76 years. The sample was based on residents of Russia (385 people), also included Russian-speaking respondents from other countries such as Israel, Canada, Great Britain, USA, Indonesia.
Using the scale, the authors managed to achieve meaningful results and prove its applicability in Russia. A relationship was also found with age. The older the employee on average and the longer the work experience, the higher the level of organizational cynicism. “Apparently, with the accumulation of experience in working relationships and the possibility of comparing different workplaces, people are becoming more tolerant of organizational decisions that may have been perceived as dishonest in their youth. “People are less disturbed by various events in organizations and become more restrained in their critical behavior, which means disidentification with the organization, ridicule and condemnation of what is going on in it,” the authors explain.
The authors hope that with the help of this scale, Russian employers will be able to clarify the situation in the team, assess the level of trust and prevent employee burnout.
