Following the collapse of a sand mine between the central Mexican states of Guerrero and Morelos, Civil Protection officials confirmed the death of one of the two workers buriedwithout knowing the state of the second.
The sand mine is located in the town of Tecalco, in the municipality of Taxco, in northern Guerrero and bordering the town of Amacuzac in the south of the central Mexican state of Morelos. “Currently, material removal work is underway at the Amacuzac mine. the search for a second victim“, shared the Civil Protection of Morelos on its official Twitter account. The authorities also stated that the operation personnel were in the incident area for coordinated work in terms of attention to emergencies and disasters.
According to an emergency call registered in the Iguala “C4” surveillance system, it was approximately 1:45 PM (07:45 GMT) when a landslide of about 80 cubic meters collapsed.
Guerrero’s Secretary of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection reported that rescuers from the north, state and municipality have begun work to rescue two people, including rescuers from Morelos state. Workers from the state capital Chilpancingo Rescue Unit, which were transported by helicopter to support the work, also joined. Roberto Arroyo Matus, the head of this agency, admitted: It is unknown if the workers are alive. after the sand settled on them. According to the information obtained, heavy machinery is already being used to lift the stone material to remove the two workers.
Last August, the collapse of another mine in northern Mexico, leaving 10 Mexican workers underground and under water, reignited the debate over the actions of mining companies in Mexico. The Mexican government recently reported that efforts are underway to remove the bodies of these miners, who were buried on August 3 at the El Pinabete mine in northern Mexico’s Coahuila state.
