Renewable energies, especially hydrogen and offshore wind, are taking shape in Asturias with projects that are a cornerstone in Spain. The Institute for Energy Diversification and Conservation (IDAE) has approved nearly €40m in aid for four Asturias green hydrogen production projects.

The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge has approved approximately €40m in aid to finance four Asturias projects related to the production and promotion of green hydrogen. These actions are led by EDP and Hunosa and are part of the ReCode program, short for Reactivation, Competitiveness and Decarbonization, a public-private partnership initiative coordinated by the Ministry of Industry, Employment and Economic Promotion. In the first line, called the renewable hydrogen H2 Pioneers Program (pioneer and unique renewable hydrogen projects), EDP projects in Soto de Ribera and Aboño were assisted with 5.7 million euros and 14.2 million euros respectively. IDAE has approved a €4 million grant for green hydrogen production at Hunosa’s Pozo Fondón facilities. In the second line of the so-called “big electrolysis demonstrators for the promotion of innovative value chain and renewable hydrogen knowledge”, the organization has approved €15 million EDP for a phase of the project called Asturias H2 Valley (Asturias Hydrogen Valley). , for the Aboño thermal power plant. These initiatives confirm the potential of Asturias to lead the development of green hydrogen in Spain.

Attractive environments for the development of offshore wind energy

Asturias shares its experience in renewable energy with the rest of the world and takes part in important events such as the Wind Energy Fair in Hamburg (Germany) last September. To promote the potential as a region producing goods and services in the Wind Energy value chain; Promote renewable energy related business networking among European companies and conduct international research on the state of the sector as well as attract investments related to wind power generation. During the 4 days of the fair, the participating Asturias companies had the opportunity to explore the latest technologies in wind energy, get in touch with major European groups in the renewable energy value chain, and present their products and services. Asturias is an attractive place to invest in activities linked to the wind sector. Companies in the industry are a good example of the strength and capabilities of the industry and the advanced services associated with wind power generation activities: from the manufacture of support vessels for offshore wind farms to the co-manufacturing of structures and components for wind farms. offers technological solutions in structural integrity with engineering companies that have the capacity to design and develop wind farms on land and offshore. In addition to offering an attractive industrial environment to investors, Asturias has technology centers to support R&D activities, excellent port infrastructures for the transportation of structures, and an extensive industrial area network for settlement.

HyDeal and ReCoDe projects, two jewels for the future

Asturias stands out as a leading player in the development of green energies at national, European and even global level. A position recently highlighted by the European Commission during a visit by Grow DG to the Principality.

Asturias is strategically located to lead the development of green hydrogen. We have companies that build a solvent value chain for the production, storage, transportation and end-uses of green hydrogen, creating a quality electrical infrastructure, water for hydrogen production processes and, if that’s not enough, strong demand. use in different industrial processes in sectors where there is practically only one way to decarbonize.

The HyDeal Spain project is a guarantee of sustaining the steel industry in Asturias for decades and preserving the industrial heart of the Principality. Initially, an investment figure of 8,000 million euros was considered, but final estimates are already close to 10,000 million.

And of course, the ReCoDe project (short for Reactivation, Competitiveness, Decarbonization) is actually a regional project consisting of 25 projects related to hydrogen from many different perspectives and 8 actions with a higher maturity level, including the EDP investment. Subscription.
