Scientists from Cardiff University have learned the results of a study that driving with worn tires is more dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol. informs news portal DailyMail.
Alcohol intoxication increases the driver’s reaction time by an average of 120 milliseconds. Therefore, the stopping distance of the car increases. In other words, this will increase the braking distance by 4 meters while driving at 100 km/h.
Worn tires increase stopping distance by a factor of seven. According to the test results, tires with 1.6 mm tread have 36% less grip than tires with 4 mm tread. This increases the braking distance to 26 metres.
The minimum residual tread depth for passenger car tires in Russia is only 1.6 mm. This means that deeper tread tires should be used for better safety.
