Since they are not part of a single biometric system, it would be superfluous to reject the mandatory submission of fingerprints under the new biometrics law, if adopted. This was reported to socialbites.ca by Alexander Khinshtein, chairman of the State Duma Information Policy Committee. Fundamentals of data processing and the bill on a unified biometric system will be discussed in the second reading on 20 December.

“We propose to limit the list of biometrics to only two categories – this is a voice sample and an image of a person’s face,” said the parliamentarian.

At the same time, Khinshtein noted that the bill does not apply to technologies such as Face ID.

“I’m an iPhone user myself and I know that the Face ID functionality is only enabled with the user’s permission. You can refuse it and not use it. As for the law, it regulates the activity of state information systems and what is involved in it. Face ID, which works on the platform of Google or other foreign participants, is not included in our information system. Whatever was on the territory of the Russian Federation was immersed in it, ”Khinshtein said.

Earlier, on the HRC Telegram channel, in one of the posts, Council members noted the negative consequences if such biometric personal data of Russians were leaked, such as fingerprints or voice.
