House gas explosion occurred in an apartment on the third floor of house number 5 on Kuznetsova Street in Yaroslavl. This was reported in the 76.RU publication. Residents heard a loud explosion at around 6:30 Moscow time.
As a result of the incident, 40-year-old tenant Alexei Tarakanovsky was hospitalized. More than 70% of the man’s body surface has been burned, he’s in serious condition.
“He opened the door, it was burned. We planted it, we went inside, we turned off the gas,” a neighbor of the deceased told the news about the incident. After the explosion, the walls of the apartment collapsed, the floor and ceiling were damaged, the pipes were broken – the kitchen was flooded.
A woman living in a neighboring apartment was also taken to the hospital. One of the neighbors said that a woman in her last pregnancy may have suffered. “I want to know how Tanya is. She’s in her last period. She has an apartment nearby,” she said.
However, the Ministry of Health of the Yaroslavl Region reported that a 90-year-old woman was hospitalized when her health deteriorated due to stress.
“The reason for the explosion is very simple – it is the unauthorized operation of gas equipment,” Mikhail Evraev, the governor of the Yaroslavl region, said during the interview.
He added that other apartments in building 5 were not affected. “Everything necessary is being done. I have ordered additional checks,” he said.
In an interview with the media, an eyewitness suggested that the explosion may have occurred due to smoking in an apartment with open gas.
TASS reported that a malfunction in the gas stove may have caused the explosion, citing a source from the emergency services.
It was determined that the cause of the gas explosion in the apartment was a malfunction in the gas stove, as previously determined.
Residents of the three-story building were evacuated to the Torpedo sports complex, a temporary accommodation facility. Some citizens remained at the scene.
“I saw it on social networks and ran. Chaos in the country. What other feelings? They said that you pulled the gas at the first entrance on the third floor,” said one of the residents of Yaroslavl.
The Investigative Department of the Yaroslavl Region Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case under Part 1 of Art. 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (performing work that does not meet the requirements for the safety and health of consumers). However, the case was soon reclassified under a more serious article.

The Investigative Committee of the Investigative Committee reported 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (the performance of work that negligently does not meet the requirements for the safety and health of consumers, entailing grievous bodily harm).
District officials will review the condition of the house and decide what to do next.
