“I am sorry”
Timur Bekmansurov had his last word in court on Tuesday. He noted that he “fully” admitted that he was “guilty of committing a crime”.
“I am sorry for what I have done. I undertake to compensate for the damage caused by my actions with my disability pension,” he said.
It also asked the judge to “fully apply the principles of humanism and the individuality of criminal punishment in the process of making the final decision”.
“While solving the problem of the type and amount of the penalty, I request you not to impose the maximum penalty on me,” Bekmansurov said.
When sentencing, Izvestia urged the court to consider extenuating circumstances, including a recent third-degree disability, positive testimonials, and active cooperation with law enforcement during the investigation.
“The court has withdrawn to the negotiation room to make a decision. The announcement will be made on 28 December,” he said.
prosecutor’s request
At a court hearing the previous day, Bekmansurov admitted that the victims and relatives of the killed had claimed more than 25 million rubles in compensation against him, RIA Novosti reported. He also agreed to pay Perm State University 275,000 rubles for damage to furniture, walls and other property of the university.
The public prosecutor asked the court to sentence Bekmansurov to life imprisonment.
“Please admit your guilt. I demand that Timur Maratovic Bekmansurov be sentenced to life imprisonment, based on the sum of the crimes,” the prosecutor said.
He explained that the mass murderer must spend the first five years in prison, and then spend time in a special regime correctional colony.
The prosecution also accepted that Bekmansurv’s admission of guilt and his state of health could be considered as mitigating circumstances.
According to RIA Novosti, the state’s attorney’s office believes the killer has a schizoid personality disorder. But he is also aware of the nature and dangers of his actions.
“I think the life sentence is fair. Such a being should not carry his thoughts into the world. Life for life. Citing the words of Yaroslav Aramelev, the father of the student who lost his life in the conflict, the agency said it is necessary to protect this world from such people.
At the same hearing, the defendant’s lawyer, Viktor Pankov, requested that Bekmansurov not be given a life sentence.
“It is necessary to take into account the young age of the client, he was in adult status for a short time. <…> I beg <…> do not give a life sentence, ”the defender asked.
He believes that the court should take into account Bekmansurov’s passion for computer games, which could impress him. Pankov also pointed to the defendant’s recent disability – he received bullet wounds during his arrest due to amputation of his left leg.
The defender recalled that the murderer did not agree with the forensic psychiatric examination decision, which considered him sane. Another reason for commuting the sentence, Pankov considered, was the client’s repentance. He also noted that the prosecution did not object to the classification of the crimes he had voiced.
Shooting at a Perm university
On the morning of September 20, 2021, Bekmansurov, dressed in black, arrived on the campus of Perm State University and opened fire on the people with the Turkish shotgun he had previously purchased.
According to investigators, he went from the checkpoint to the training buildings, walked through the corridors of the buildings. He also fired at people, finishing off the wounded with close range shots. Bekmansurov managed to kill six people and injure 40 before he was taken into police custody. A law enforcement officer shot the assailant with a service gun.
According to the state prosecutor’s office, Bekmansurov started thinking about mass murder while he was still in school because of his hatred of people and himself.
