An American woman died of a massive cerebral hemorrhage while undergoing experimental treatment for Alzheimer’s disease with a drug called lecanemab. informs Science. This is the second death during the trial of this drug.

A 65-year-old woman received an injection of a drug with antibodies. Cerebral haemorrhages have been reported previously with the use of such antibodies.

The tests are carried out by Eisai. He had previously said that the third phase of clinical trials of the drug was successful. A year and a half after the experiments began, participants with early-stage dementia had 27% cognitive impairment compared to the control group.

The incident raises questions about the safety of prescribing the drug, the researchers said. If the drug is approved by the authorities, it will have to be prescribed along with substances aimed at preventing brain hemorrhages.

Eisai declined to comment on the incident.
