In the bedding industry, terms such as recycling or reusing materials still pose a problem. 90% of the mattresses removed from homes today end their life in the landfill, despite the reuse possibilities these products have, thanks to the combination and delamination of materials, among other features. Companies like Dormitienda have been operating within their business culture for more than 25 years and, with its growing presence, rely on a model that guarantees sustainability with two main objectives: manage a responsible product recall that contributes to “zero residue” and provide the customer with an ecological rest option.
In the course of more than two decades leading the production and commercialization of the remaining systems, the firm led by Mónica Duart has increasingly sought and incorporated techniques that allow it, through the real internalization of these facilities and investment in R&D+i. to reduce the environmental footprint. One of the lines of action in this direction has been to recycle polluting materials such as plastics into 100% recycled textiles, in a process that sterilizes, stretches and melts the material to obtain these high strength plastic fibers. In this sense, Dormitienda’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is not just a hallmark, it is tangible: More than 80,000 plastic bottles have been recycled thanks to the Eco-Friendly product line.
The second pillar of sustainable rest is waste management. The company started by recycling all the materials corresponding to the steel springs required for the rest systems. In this process where the “zero waste” culture is deepened, milestones have been achieved one after another and the next step will be that 100% of their deposits will not actually produce any waste. In other words, the total material of the remaining systems has a second life in the production of recycled cores, which reduces their emissions by 60% and reduces their water footprint by 99%.
In this way, the Valencian company points to reuse as the main strategy in its contribution to the fight against the climate crisis, both from its development and its withdrawal through the collection of previous rest systems. In response, the Duart company continues to advance key issues such as sustainable mobility, decarbonizing its logistics centers by 90% with electrical machinery and reducing emissions.
National Sustainability Convention
Dormitienda works with continuous improvement processes and permanently updates the sustainability culture among its teams. Thus, the company will bring together more than 100 employees from 90 stores in Spain at the National Congress to be held in Valencia on 3 December. At this conference, where strategic lines of action for the coming year will be determined, environmental awareness that affects all departments of the company will also be brought to the fore in order to instill this sustainable structure at every stage of production and sales.
