Vegetable gardens and the sun: arguments “for”

Discussions on extending May this year heat up Vladislav Davankov, Deputy Head of the State Duma, deputy of the New People group. According to that ideaAgainst the background of increased prices in stores, it is necessary to give the Russians time to process their personal garden.

“Spring is here and the planting season is approaching. But not the same plantings, but vegetable plantings. We are already seeing that this season will be clearly interrupted in Ukraine. But even in Russia there are problems with seeds, problems with the material used to ensure our food security this fall.

The New People party’s proposal is to take the long May holidays this year. Because people need to survive. Now we see how the prices of all products have increased. This infamous “borscht set” grew by 10-40%. Therefore, we better dedicate this time of the May holidays to ensuring that we have food in the fall, ”explained Davankov.

He added that the long May holidays will make Russians pay more attention not only to their vegetable gardens, but also to their loved ones.

Davankov noted that entrepreneurs have had a lot of trouble this year and it’s important to “keep people in business.” But the government can do this by introducing government support measures, but people still need long vacations.

“We will talk to the government about a business support program, including government subsidies for businesses to maintain their wage level. “It’s important to keep people at work, but at the same time we want to support everyone by taking long vacations like this.”

May extension proposal Ivan Abramov, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Economic Committee. Now he’s focused on the fact that people really need rest.

“People are psychologically exhausted. First covid, now sanctions. In such difficult times, people need to be given a break, ”the senator stressed.

Also, Abramov noted that the long weekend in May compensates for the Russian New Year holidays. In winter, strict measures to combat the coronavirus were in force in Russia, which, according to the senator, did not allow citizens to fully relax. And according to him, all restrictions in Russia during the May holidays will most likely be lifted.

Sergei Mironov, leader of the Fair Russia faction in the State Duma Last year, he proposed reducing the New Year holidays, making the weekend continuous between the May holidays. “People have nothing to do in the winter,” he said, and in the spring “everyone will be at the cottage in May.”

Former chief medical doctor of Russia, State Duma deputy Gennady Onishchenko, United Russia fraction, last year, he spoke in favor of extending the May holidays by deducting the days from the New Year holidays.

“It makes sense if they plan to extend the May holidays to reduce the Christmas drunkenness and give people the opportunity to be in the suburbs instead of the two weeks in January, get things organized and, of course, enjoy the first heat,” he believes.

Impact on agriculture: counter-arguments

First Deputy Head of the Duma faction “Fair Russia – For Truth” Oleg Nilov He did not support the extension of May, because it will hit agriculture on the contrary. Nilov remindedHe said that industrial planting work continued throughout May, and that workers were offered to send them on an extended vacation instead. Farmers will therefore be faced with a choice: not let workers pay double for work on weekends or send them on vacation in the middle of the planting season. Russian summer residents, on the other hand, do not really need long weekends.

“Holidays, on the contrary, can only harm the agricultural sector. I mean not gardeners and gardeners, but workers of industrial, agricultural enterprises. <…> We need to consult before taking such initiatives. I would like to suggest something new, but this time New People failed. Citizens who cultivate their summer cottages and garden plots already have some measured experience, which allows them to cope without long vacations, ”the author said.

He added that authorities may actually support gardeners in a different way. Instead of long vacations, Russians may be allowed to take short vacations to cultivate their land.

“Citizens take, for various reasons, short-term holidays or vacations at their own expense, under applicable conditions. Here the situation can even be respectful. And to declare all-Russian holidays on this occasion will be to the detriment of the main agricultural production, ”the statement said.

Elena Tsunaeva, First Deputy Chairman of the Duma Working Committee of the United Russia fraction, stated “Newspaper. Ru” said it was wrong and unreasonable to attribute the extension of May to the purchase of products.

“Of course, it is nice and pleasant to have long weekends, you can go somewhere with your family on New Year’s Eve as in the past, especially because it is spring. But it seems to me to connect this to the issue of harvesting vegetables and products, at least wrong. This is not the reason in our country, where we have a very different climate, a different life and consumption culture, a different horticultural culture. It will be suitable for the Krasnodar Territory, but for Novosibirsk or Karelia, May 4 and 5 is not the period when they sow, ”explained Tsunaeva.

Member of the State Duma Committee on Labor, Social Policy and Veterans Affairs Svetlana Bessarab, United Russia fraction, also finds the extension of May inappropriate in the context of economic sanctions.

“Employers today are going through a very difficult period of economic sanctions. With the support of the government, they are trying to maintain and increase wages, maintain jobs for employees and recruit new staff, taking into account that foreign companies are leaving the Russian markets. Under these circumstances, I do not find it right to impose additional fees on them in order to provide additional holidays.”

Deputy Chairman of the State Duma, Deputy LDPR Igor Lebedev Last year, he called the extension of May “nonsense” and criticized the frequent changes in the law that slowed the ordinary pace of life of Russians.

“One of the problems of our state in the field of law-making is that we sway from side to side every year. It’s like this, then like this, then like that, then like that again. Above the head, then below the head. People do not have time to get used to the laws we adopt, and we are already adopting the opposite. This is ridiculous.

Everyone is already accustomed to a good New Year’s holiday. People have kids, kids have holidays at school. People have the opportunity to spend this time with their families and children. Someone has the opportunity to leave. All factions supported the idea of long New Year holidays. <…> “Leave the holidays alone, leave the people alone,” he said.
