Generalitat Valenciana Ministry of Ecological Transition It has submitted a request of 120m euros to develop the first mining project of former landfills in the whole of Spain.. This is a technique tested by the European Union, consisting of emptying old domestic waste dumps. reuse materials not recovered at that time -mainly aluminium, steel, plastic and paper or biomass – can be reconverted into new resources with existing technology.
It is an example of the so-called circular economy, which aims to reuse seemingly useless elements. and those who have finished their cycle of use, but can still aspire to a new life. This saves from the extraction of materials in the natural environment and saves economic costs.
The request of the department led by Mireia Molla is part of the consultation carried out by the Government on possible innovative projects related to ecological transition and circular economy.
The mullah pointed Opportunity to “reverse the environmental impact of the activity” offered by existing techniquesin recent developments in waste management, as in the case of landfill mining.
The Ministry has for some time been following the European Union’s pilot experiences with regard to the reuse of old landfills, in line with proposals advocating the reprocessing of waste from the linear economy to move towards “zero waste” strategies.
In this senseThe Ecological Transition team has developed different technological processes that can bring this new initiative to life.will reinforce the latest solutions in waste management implemented in our region.
This is not the only waste-related initiative Generalitat has supported. In the last two years, the Valencian Community has launched lines for the recovery of broken glass in the mixed waste stream, the complete reuse of materials found in mattresses, and the recovery of aluminum and mild steel. Also, very soon, a new robot will be installed at the Picasent treatment plant for the separation of small-size plastic.
A central Administration map containing data for 2018 collected the existence of 182 controlled sanitary landfills in our country. These are the areas where unusable solid wastes are accumulated in layers and trying to minimize the inconveniences in terms of safety and public health.
