Japanese scientists from the University of Tsukuba found that regular bicycle trips reduce the risk of death and long -term care in old age. A significant effect is observed especially in those who do not drive. Research Results published Journal of Transport Research Chapter F: Traffic Psychology and Behavior.
Scientists analyzed data on the health and physical activity of Japan residents gathered during the 2013-2023 period. At the beginning of the observation, it was revealed that elderly participants who frequently use the bike faced less serious health disorders in the following years. However, improvements were recorded not only for those who continue to drive, but also between people who started to do later.
The most significant decrease in risks were the elderly without a driver’s license – according to scientists, bicycle sticks played a particularly important compensatory role in their lives.
The authors of the study emphasize that bicycle is not only a way to increase physical activity. Bicycle sticks also help to improve the psycho -emotional condition and maintain independence in old age. Scientists call for the development of infrastructure and social initiatives to make a bicycle safer and more attractive for the old generation.
