Leipzig University (Germany) and Amsterdam Ozgur University (Netherlands) group scientists have discovered an incredible ability of the brain: it can “configure” the first stages of visual processing to automatically filter the distinctive elements. The study was published scientifically broadcasting Journal of Neuroscience (TJN).
In an experiment with the participation of 24 people, volunteers were looking for target objects (for example, green circles) between distraction elements (red rhombus).
Using electroencephalography (EEG), experts said that the brain started to suppress the processing of distracting stimuli in “dangerous” regions in the early stages after the repeated repetition. In addition, the participants found targets in recognizing places of 27% faster.
“This does not ignore consciously – the visual system itself adapted, reduces the processing of unnecessary information,” he said.
Discovery explains why the usual advertising shields of experiences with experience, experienced users find what is necessary in familiar interfaces and why they attract less attention by the recurrent design of textbooks.
Scientists plan to examine how this mechanism affects road safety and digital platform design.
