South Korean scientists from Seoul National University and Gachon University developed the first type of liquid robot that could freely deform, share, unite and move in difficult conditions. The study was published scientifically magazine Science Developments (SCIADV).
The device was created on the basis of a liquid covered with a dense hydrophobic plate (water -teeth) particles. This design combines the flexibility of the liquid and the strength of the layer, allowing the robot to rely on excessive loads, restore shape and perform complex tasks.
Initially, scientists thought about the creation of spherical drops covered with particles, but later decided to use the ice cubes covered with particles and then melted. This approach significantly increased the strength and stability of the robot.
Such a machine can pass through narrow cracks between metal rods, for example. The robot can also be divided into pieces and then restore its integrity, capture and move objects, and move with both black and water.
The device is controlled using sound waves that allow you to adjust the desired speed and direction.
According to the authors of development, one of the sources of inspiration for this was the T-1000 liquid-metal robot of Fantastic Action Film Director James Cameron.
