American scientists from the University of Iowa have formed a patch for plants that rapidly reveal stress due to pests, droughts, infections or temperature changes. The device measures the level of hydrogen peroxide – the key marker of the vegetation condition. The study was published scientifically magazine ACS sensors.
The patch consists of a number of microscopic needles applied to a flexible base. Hitosan hydrogel is applied to the surface that responds to the hydrogen peroxide produced by plants in response to stress. The enzyme in the hydrogel converts chemical changes into an electrical current measured by the sensor. The device is attached to the lower side of the leaves and works in just one minute.
Scientists tested patches on bacterial infection soybean and tobacco plants. Sensors increased significantly compared to being healthy in hydrogen peroxide in patient plants.
This confirmed that the device effectively revealed stress in the early stages before the appearance of visible symptoms.
Development will help farmers quickly respond to problems such as illness or drought and take measures to protect the crop.
