Scientists from the University of California, USA, analyzed data on the cognitive effects of exercise and concluded that even a short session of physical activity can have a positive effect on mental abilities. The study was published in the journal Communication Psychology (ComPsychology).
While regular exercise is already known to have physical health benefits and helps support long-term brain function, the effects of short-term exercise have been less studied. The researchers decided to address inconsistencies identified in previous studies, where both improvements and deteriorations in cognitive performance were observed after training.
Scientists analyzed 113 studies involving more than 4,000 participants aged 18 to 45. The results showed that physical activity had positive effects on areas such as attention, memory and executive functions. The improvement was particularly noticeable in thinking flexibility tasks.
Exercise type and intensity were found to be important factors in improving cognitive function. Cycling and high-intensity interval training showed the greatest improvements in cognitive brain function. Vigorous training led to more significant results than moderate-intensity exercise.
Researchers emphasize that although the effect of short training is small, it is still important, especially in improving planning ability and concentration.
