Filipino scientists from Ateneo de Manila University have found that the use of memes can significantly improve learning outcomes in high school science classes. The study was published in the scientific journal broadcasting Asian Journal of Biology Education (AJBE).
More than 200 11th grade students from private secondary schools, where precise topics are studied in depth, participated in the project.
The teens were divided into two groups: experimental classes, where biology was taught using memes, and control classes, where regular teaching materials were used.
Over the course of five weeks, both groups tackled challenging topics like cell division and genetics, while the experimental group engaged in activities like creating their own class-related memes.
To evaluate the effectiveness of this approach, the study used a combination of pretests and posttests, each consisting of 30 questions designed to assess students’ understanding of the material.
Teens who learned to use memes scored 21% higher on posttests than the control group, averaging 21.46 correct answers, while those in the second group received only 17.74 correct answers.
Additionally, learning about biology through memes allowed young people to develop more positive attitudes towards the subject and gave them greater confidence in their ability to understand and apply scientific concepts.
By integrating humor and cultural references, memes help students make connections and learn information more effectively, the study’s authors noted.
