An international team of scientists from the UK and Norway has discovered another benefit of exercise for older people. It turns out that education helps to better understand the language in old age. The research was published in the scientific journal magazine Aging, Neuropsychology and Cognition (ANC).
The experiment involved two groups of 80 people with an average age of about 65. In one of these, participants spoke only English, in the second they spoke both English and Norwegian.
Volunteers followed a six-month home exercise program that included one circuit training session and two sessions of cardio exercise.
Study participants were tested before and after exercises on their ability to recognize words in a spoken sentence. Monolingual participants who followed the exercise regimen were 7% faster at finding the correct words after their fitness improved.
However, among bilingual participants, the study found no improvements in language comprehension and use. Scientists believe this is due to the more complex cognitive processes of language processing.
Previous researchers I learnedIt is stated that physical activity in old age reduces the risk of death by 22%.
