Experts found that consuming one glass of alcohol a day increases the risk of esophageal cancer in men by 51 percent and the risk of cirrhosis in women by 37 percent. Three drinks a day increased the risk of unintentional injury by 68% in both men and women. Scientists have also confirmed that regular alcohol consumption leads to liver disease, especially in people with existing risk factors such as hepatitis C.
One serving of alcohol can be considered as 355ml of regular beer, 150ml of wine and 45ml of spirits (such as whisky, cognac or brandy). Current U.S. guidelines recommend that men have no more than two drinks a day and women have no more than one. But a new report suggests that even this amount could be dangerous.
