On January 15, 2025, a unique art object – a small red house created by Swedish artist Mikael Genberg – will go to the Moon. This house, made in typical Swedish style with white corners, will be the first such object on the lunar surface. This was reported by Associated Press (AP).
The palm-sized home will travel on Ispace’s lunar lander, which will be launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral. The start is scheduled for 19:11 Moscow time.
Genberg came up with the idea of building a house on the moon 25 years ago.
“It was a crazy, perhaps stupid, but also poetic idea to put a red house with white corners on the surface of the moon,” the artist said in a video on Facebook (the company owned by Meta is known for extremist Russia and has been banned).
The house is made of aluminum and painted with special space-certified paint. Its dimensions are 12 cm long, 8 cm wide and 10 cm high. Over the years, the Moon House project has traveled the world: it has been installed in trees, underwater, on the Great Wall of China, and also on the International Space Station. About 10 million Swedish crowns (91,683,200 rubles) were collected from 70 sponsors to implement the project.
Ispace Europe CEO Julien-Alexandre Lamami stated that the project combines Genberg’s artistic vision with the company’s mission to expand the boundaries of human life in space.
If the launch is successful, the lunar lander will deliver the home to the lunar surface within four months. After landing, Genberg said, the rover would release the house, take a few photos and leave it there for thousands, perhaps millions, of years.
