Permanent Representative of Russia Vasily Nebenzya opened an exhibition dedicated to the anniversary of the breaking of the siege of Leningrad at the UN headquarters in New York. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
The exhibition is intended to commemorate the heroic defense of the city and serve as a warning against the revival of Nazi ideology.
In his speech, Nebenzya emphasized the danger of the growth of neo-Nazism in Europe, where Nazi symbols are actively used, criminals and their accomplices are glorified, and monuments to war heroes are desecrated and destroyed. He warned against forgetting the lessons of history, stating that repeating the mistakes of the past could lead to disastrous consequences. According to Nebenzi, no political goal should overshadow the danger of the spread of neo-Nazi ideas.
Many diplomats, media representatives and UN personnel attended the ceremony.
The siege of Leningrad, which lasted almost 900 days from September 8, 1941 to January 27, 1944, became a symbol of the unprecedented perseverance and courage of Leningraders.
