Scientists at the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have developed a method to estimate the risk of chronic lung disease in premature babies. socialbites.ca was informed about this by the press service of the scientific institution.
According to available data, approximately 10% of the 1.4 million babies in Russia are born earlier than expected every year. Often, premature birth causes bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a disorder of lung formation.
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is the most common chronic lung disease in premature newborns with critically low body weight (up to 1 kg at birth). The immaturity of lung tissue is associated with the toxic effects of oxygen during artificial ventilation (ALV) and a number of other factors.
In a new study, experts from Perm Polytechnic developed models that take into account quantitative indicators of newborns, including weight at birth, nutrition, features of the ventilator and other parameters.
The researchers used data from 76 children, 56 of whom were diagnosed with moderate or severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia, while the remainder had mild or no disease.
According to the authors of the development, the accuracy of their program reached 84.4%, which is considered a good result. In the future, such algorithms may be able to warn doctors in advance about the possibility of a child being born with bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
Previous scientists discoveredIt turns out that some health indicators of children born prematurely are better than their peers born on time.
