Sociologists from the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) examined the causes and consequences of the global popularity of films, TV series, podcasts and other content about serial killers. The research was published in the scientific journal broadcasting Crime, Media, Culture: An International Journal (CMC).
The team conducted a series of interviews to understand the motivations that motivate Russian youth to consume documentaries and fictional works about crime. The surveys covered a group of young men and women aged 18 to 36 from 14 cities in Russia.
Researchers have focused on motivations for consuming media content rather than its impact on audiences. Responses showed that interest in violent events was not driven by a desire to witness violence and did not trigger a desire to commit violence in real life.
Scientists have identified two types of motivations that drive the consumption of information about maniacs: cognitive and emotional. The first implies a desire to understand the motivations of criminals by relating their actions to childhood traumas, psychological problems and other factors.
Emotional factors provide the opportunity to experience strong emotions, often compensating for the lack of excitement in daily life.
“Being interested in stories about maniacs, whether in television series or podcasts, is not a glorification of cruelty. Participants did not justify the criminals’ actions. On the contrary, they stated that such incidents should be prevented,” the authors of the report stated.
Researchers emphasized that interest in violent crime stories stems from curiosity and the search for new experiences. These results will help psychologists create new support programs for people experiencing stress or emotional starvation.
