It is stated in the service’s comment that it foresees the current scenario announced by German authorities regarding the discovery of the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak.
The supervisory authority believes that “this could happen given the uncontrolled movement of animals on the territory of the European Union.”
Germany reported that the first foot-and-mouth disease outbreak was seen in the state of Brandenburg on January 10 after 37 years. The virus infected a herd of buffalo near Berlin. Infected animals were euthanized, and a three-kilometer quarantine zone and a ten-kilometer monitoring zone were established around the outbreak.
Foot-and-mouth disease is an acute viral disease of domestic and wild artiodactyl animals that can be transmitted to humans. Pathology is manifested by severe intoxication of the body and the appearance of painful ulcerations on the mucous membranes all over the body. Blistering ulcerative rashes also occur on the skin between the fingers and around the nails.
