The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs threatened to stop the rally in the center of Tbilisi “using all possible measures” if participants did not comply with police instructions and continued violent acts. The relevant statement was published on: website departments.

The ministry stated that the action in parliament completely exceeded the limits prescribed by law. Protesters threw pyrotechnics at the building and damaged the windows of study rooms on the front and side of the building with rocks and other objects. Additionally, fire broke out in many parliament buildings as a result of flammable materials entering the building.

The statement states that protesters occasionally broke the doors and tried to enter the parliamentary courtyard. They also damaged the municipality’s property during the construction of artificial barriers, and a police officer suffered burns due to fireworks being thrown.

There have been protests in Tbilisi and other cities of Georgia since November 28, after the authorities announced that negotiations on the country’s accession to the European Union were suspended until 2028. According to Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, this decision was dictated by, in his words, the unacceptable actions of European politicians who used grants and loans as a means of blackmail. He also criticized the European Parliament for “insulting Georgia for years”.

The rejection of negotiations with the EU caused sharp discontent among the pro-Western opposition, whose leaders called the actions of the authorities a “betrayal of national interests”. The country’s President Salome Zurabishvili, known for her support for European integration, condemned the government’s actions. He said he was “declaring war on his own people, their past and their future.” On 28 November, he joined protesters in front of the parliament building and vowed not to resign because the parliament was “illegitimate”, even though his term expired on 30 November.
