Scientists discovered an Anglo-Saxon copy of a Roman work containing many spelling errors 20:25

British archaeologists discovered 5th-6th AD ruins during their excavations near the town of Attleborough in Norfolk, England. They came across an unusual artifact dating back to centuries. The find was a necklace shaped like a Roman coin called a solidus, dating from the time of Emperor Honorius, who ruled the Western Roman Empire from 393 to 423. Opening announced portal Live Science.

According to scientists, on the front side of the necklace there was a bust of Honorius in crown and armor, and on the back – a figure with a military standard in one hand and a miniature goddess Nike (the Roman symbol of victory). the other.

Researchers noted that the decoration they found turned out to be unique. It was made by the pagan Anglo-Saxons, and the coin they took as a model belonged to Christian Rome.

In addition, the Anglo-Saxon tribes at that time did not have a fully developed writing system, so their products were decorated with very strange inscriptions.

Genuine Roman solids from the time of Emperor Honorius were printed with the Latin phrase “RESTITVTOR REIPVBLICAE,” meaning “Restorator of the Republic.” Unknown Anglo-Saxon masters reproduced this text as “STITVTOR EIPVBLICAE”, omitting some letters and mixing up others, so the message lost its meaning.

The archaeologists added that the spelling errors did not bother the Anglo-Saxons because they did not plan to counterfeit Roman money, but wanted to create individual jewels. It is indicated by a gold ring for a cord or chain soldered to the coin.
