A high-quality gold ore deposit with nearly a thousand tons of gold reserves has been discovered in central China. Its value is estimated at approximately $83 billion, making it the largest and most valuable deposit ever found. Portal opening announced Science Alert.
The deposit is located in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province. Experts from the state’s Bureau of Geology have discovered 40 gold veins at a depth of up to two kilometers, and 3D modeling shows the possibility of finding additional reserves.
Each ton of ore contains up to 138 grams of gold. This significantly exceeds standard indicators. For example, ore containing more than eight grams of gold per tonne is already considered high quality.
China is the world leader in gold mining, with proven reserves of over two thousand tonnes at the beginning of 2024. This represents approximately 10% of total world production.
The announcement of the new discovery caused a further rise in gold prices amid global economic instability.
