Scientists from University College Dublin (UCD) found figs that are more than two thousand years old during an archaeological excavation at Dramanach Head in north Dublin. about this reports Ancient Origins edition.
Scientists noted that the cape previously hosted an important trading post of the Roman Empire. A burnt piece of fig fruit, estimated to be two thousand years old, was found there. This unique object is the first of its kind discovered in Ireland.
Excavations in this area have been carried out during the summer months for several years. Other finds by archaeologists include ceramic and metal objects, as well as food remains preserved in a charred state.
Professor Merial McClatchy, director of the Ancient Foods Research Group at University College Dublin’s School of Archaeology, said fig seeds had previously been discovered during excavations in medieval Dublin, Cork and other cities, but the latest find was of extraordinary importance.
“It is unique in Ireland and is the oldest example of exotic fruit found here,” he said.
The Roman Empire, which controlled most of Europe and parts of Asia and North Africa, traded heavily in exotic foods, including figs. However, until now it was not known that this fruit was brought to Ireland.
