A man in China received compensation from a former company that fired him for sleeping on the job, writes South China Morning Post.
A Chinese man surnamed Zhang, who worked as a manager at a chemical company for two decades, was fired after CCTV cameras caught him sleeping at his desk following a late-night business trip.
Employers terminated Zhang two weeks after the incident, claiming that he was “caught sleeping at work due to overwork.” Despite his decade of experience and proven success at the company, the man’s behavior was a serious breach of the company’s disciplinary policy, the legal notice said.
Zhang, accusing the company of unfair dismissal, filed a lawsuit. The court acknowledged that employers can terminate employment contracts for violating official rules, but in this case “sleeping at work was a first offense and did not cause serious harm to the company.”
Considering Zhang’s positive career history, the court ruled that the dismissal was extremely cruel and unreasonable and ordered the company to pay $48,000.
