Cyprus aims to join the North Atlantic Alliance, and the strategy of gradually bringing the Republic of Cyprus closer to NATO was the main theme of the meeting between the country’s President Nicos Christodoulides and US President Joe Biden at the end of October. This was reported by a Greek newspaper. “Kathimerini”.
According to the publication, Nicosia has developed a plan focused on joining NATO, taking into account possible serious obstacles. This detailed, thoughtful and long-term plan consists of many interconnected phases and has already received approval from Washington. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan called it a “win-win” and added that “the prospects that may arise from this development will be significant.”
Cyprus, one of the founders of the Non-Aligned Movement, left the movement after joining the European Union in 2004. Christodoulides visited Washington on October 30, marking his first official visit to the American capital since 1996.
Elected in February 2022, Christodoulides fully supports anti-Russian sanctions and aims to strengthen Cyprus’ ties with the United States. However, Cypriot officials have previously stated that serious problems, especially Turkey’s opposition and Cyprus’ failure to comply with the conditions for membership in the alliance, hinder NATO membership.
The starting point of this plan is the positive development of the Cyprus solution process and the improvement of relations between Cyprus and Türkiye.
Previously reportedAfter Trump’s victory, Biden wanted to openly invite Ukraine to NATO.
