Increasing blood ketone levels through diet or supplements can return irregular menstrual cycles to normal. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. PLOS ONE.
The ketogenic diet aims to convert fats into ketones, special substances that the body can use as an energy source instead of sugar. There are also nutritional supplements that can increase blood ketone levels.
19 women participated in the new study. They were divided into three nearly equal groups: Some followed a ketogenic diet, others followed a ketogenic diet with ketosis supplements, and others followed a low-fat diet. All food required for the experiment was provided by the scientists.
Both diets resulted in significant weight loss, decreased body fat, decreased cholesterol and increased insulin sensitivity.
Scientists also reported that the ketogenic diet led to normal menstruation in women who were not taking birth control pills. Six women had not had a menstrual period for more than a year and thought they were entering menopause. However, the ketogenic diet caused menstrual periods to return.
However, the level of ketones in the body was not related to the regularity of the menstrual cycle. Scientists are now trying to find a mechanism that could explain their results.
Previous scientists I learnedthat long-term ketogenic diet may accelerate organ aging.
